Rising Sun Coltishall

In March 2020, during a lull in the new COVID restrictions, we had an enquiry from Matthew Colchester, owner of a group of pubs in North Norfolk and the surrounding Broads looking for a large oven for one of his busier pubs on the River Bure in Coltishall.

After lengthy discussions and a long trip to survey the premises, we developed a plan to install one of our large transverse brick ovens, the T1500B+ with a flue to exit through a single storey flat roof above.

The Rising Sun, set on the banks of the unspoilt River Bure, is a very busy pub with large car park and attracts a lot of visitors both by car and boat because of its beautiful setting, large garden and easily accessible river front.

Matthew and his manager Andy gave us rooms above the pub to stay in during the build and gave us all our meals and drinks FOC, something we were grateful for while working away from home. With only a minute walk downstairs to start work, we could start early and finish late if necessary but the pub was so busy by late afternoon, it was difficult to negotiate the crowds and social distance at the same time.

The oven, one of two transverse ovens we supply-the 1350 and the 1500, fitted nicely into its space, with only the loss of one large family table but gave the pub the ability to bake up to 100 pizzas an hour. The transverse oven has been enormously popular with our commercial customers as the ovens have a relatively large surface area but take up little space front to back, something that a lot of existing kitchen spaces have at a premium.

The Rising sun Coltishall is now well on its way to becoming a pizza destination in its own right, producing excellent pizza all the year round despite lockdowns and Covid restrictions on eating out.
