Chanbury’s wood-fired pizzeria Kingsteinton TQ12 3NQ

Ah Chanbury’s, what can you say about a young but very experienced couple with a mission to bring superb sourdough pizza to what is a bit of a wasteland when it comes to fine food. The story goes back a long way when Chantelle and her husband Peter were running a successful events catering company near Newton Abbott and having to slightly change direction on the birth of their first child. A permanent fixed address was needed so when premises came up in Kingsteignton, they jumped at the chance to lease it and the birth of a new solid business was also born

We were contacted in mid August 2020 with an enquiry to supply and install a large wood-fired oven in the newly acquired single story building on Exeter road that they were just about to start fitting out.

After a brief discussion by email and phone about the space available and possible size of oven, we surveyed the new takeaway building later in the month to confirm the oven position and flue direction. By the end of the month orders were placed and deposit transferred so we could book the project into our busy workflow.

The installation date was set to mid October as the fitting out would be almost complete and given the factory had resumed work at the end of August after the summer holidays, we couldn’t get the oven for at least 3-4 weeks after placing the order.

We booked ourselves into the Premier Inn on Newton Abbot racecourse in mid October ready to start work as soon as the oven arrived. It duly arrived but due to the mysteries of the transport system, part of the oven had been left at the depot as it had been unpacked. The carrier finally sent the missing sections the following day which held up the installation slightly but gladly not disastrously.

The large transverse 1350 chamotte oven went together well as usual and with slight adjustments to its position, we were able to get the flue out through the roof with a bit of trimming of the roof joists and rerouting of lighting cable.( Its important to note the flue run must comply with fire regs and any combustibles like timber or wiring must be trimmed back to a minimum gap of 65mm.)

A few days later, with the render coats finished and good tidy up we handed over the oven to an excited couple who couldn’t wait to get cooking. Chanbury’s wood-fired pizzeria was born and the new premises look great with its black and gold exterior and ample parking for takeaway customers right outside.

The takeaway has now a fantastic reputation locally and regionally and you can only judge a business by its feedback so check out their Facebook page for reviews here
