Funky ALF pizza oven Bath BA2
In February 2020, we had an enquiry from Charlie and Anna in Bath, looking for someone to design and build a simple outdoor cooking area adjacent to a covered seating space they had just created. With a budget of between £5-6000 including VAT, compromises on size of pizza oven and quality of BBQ were a consideration but we were able to come up with a scheme that worked both for us and the client.
The dirt pile in the corner was the remains of an old pond so the plan was to make the cooking area fit into this space without blocking the view over Bath from the paved terrace.
The first job was to level the dirt out and compact rocks so we could lay a concrete foundation at the correct level so the worktop would end up at a workable height. We decided to shutter the concrete slab at the level of the upper terrace so the slope of the lower paving could be levelled out.
With this done, the block base was set out at the correct spacing to accommodate the BBQ and ‘ALF’ pizza oven in the corner.
The very heavy slate worktops were sourced from our friends at The Beechfield Reclamation in Devizes. They had a stack of slate from old billiard tables but our budget meant we could only get two 6 ft lengths to work with that in our plan should have been enough, just! With a bit of clever cutting and reusing offcuts, we managed to get it all in place ready for the bbq and ALF pizza oven.
The ALF pizza oven is a fairly new product in the Four Grand-Mere catalogue and is based around the F700A ‘Le flamme’ wood-fired oven. It comes in three versions: ALFRED, the complete kit with douglas fir legs and wood store, FRED with legs but no wood store and ALF just the top part with no legs or wood store. With a white gloss epoxy shell and black metal trim, the range has a funky contemporary style that worked well with the project spec agreed with the client.
With the worktops in place, it was just a matter of fitting the BBQ and ALF pizza oven in place, rendering the blocks and installing the cupboard doors and frame.
Being one of our lightest ovens, the ALF 700 wood-fired oven is easy and very straightforward to install. Unlike our heavier mass ovens, the 700A has a one piece insulation slab and two piece cast hearth that is manageable by one person. The black cast iron base is lined with the calcium silicate insulation before placing the hearth slabs without any fixings enabling it to move and expand when heated.
The dome needs two people to lift it as it is supplied in one piece but once its in place, the ceramic fibre insulation, epoxy dome and flue can all be easily done by one person. Simple.
Charlie and Anna together with their teenage children are all now really enjoying the freedom to cook outside whenever the weather allows and this Spring 2020 has been glorious despite the gloom of the COVID hanging over all our lives. With a distancing strategy in place, we were able to carry on working to get this project finished even though most of our building material suppliers had closed.
Maybe we were lucky, Charlie and Anna are both medical professionals, we had most of what we needed on site before the complete lockdown going on around us was in place, so the project was handed over before the Easter holidays.
