Oven and Green roof

This project from 2014 is in the garden of a large Victorian rectory in Beckenham, Kent. We were asked to come up with a scheme that could fit into an under-utilised space next to the house and adjacent indoor swimming pool building.

Sedum roof garden, 950 brick oven, four grand-mere, green roof,
Sedum roof

We designed a scheme set under an oak-framed green sedum roof and took advantage of the space being on two levels so the cooking area on the lower level being under cover and the upper level giving easy access for maintenance of the roof planting. By adding some drought resistant herbs into the mix like thyme, it not only added the benefit of biodiversity into what could have been a lifeless flat roof but also provided nectar plants for local bees.

950 brick oven, green roof, four grand-mere, wood-fired oven, pizza oven, york stone cladding,
side view of sunken kitchen area

The scheme included our largest domestic brick oven, the 950 ‘ Gourmet’ set on a cropped york stone base with smooth sawn york stone shelf and worktop from our supplier of choice Bingley Stone. The aged ‘Newbold’ stone we chose matched almost exactly the original in the existing raised beds, enabling the stone to flow seamlessly to the new height required for the worktop.
