Funky ‘ALF’ wood-fired oven
We were contacted in February 2020 by Charlie, a Bath based GP, looking for a solution to an unused awkward shape area he had adjacent to a summer house that had been erected the year before. Forming a curved triangle, it wasn’t an easy space to design a cooking area in but we were invited to submit some designs and offer solutions.
After some shuffling around with elements of the spec, a small pizza oven, prep surface and a gas BBQ, we finally came up with a simple design that was able to incorporate all three within the budget that had been set and maintain the all important views to the City.
Using rendered blocks as a base and reclaimed slate from an old billiard table, the various elements were built in or on the slate, with a storage cupboard under the BBQ to house the gas bottle.
The ‘ALF’ pizza oven is just 70cm diameter inside and based on Four Grand-Mere’s F700A+, a simple all cast chamotte oven, lighter with less mass and much cheaper than our equivalent size 700C or B.
ALF is part of a range of ovens including ALFRED, a complete solution with legs and a epoxy hood and wood store built in and FRED, with legs but no wood store. Because it is all dry, with no wet render to cure, it is much faster to set up and can be installed in a few hours. To keep on budget we opted for the Beefeater range as they are very competitively priced and offer a large range of sizes and finishes. The 4 burner Discovery BBQ is a simple straightforward solution, no fuss electronics with piezo ignition and a grill and plancha included.
Charlie and the family are now using the cooking area regularly and provides a focus for family meals in the sloping garden, overlooking the historic city of Bath.
